Gippi Movie Reviews  by Bollywood Hungama - Taran Adarsh

Sonam, who has assisted Ayan Mukerji and Vishal Bhardwaj, seems like a proficient storyteller, for technically speaking, there are no glitches and the storytelling is devoid of hiccups as well. Besides, handling the kids and nurturing them into delivering polished performances is a cumbersome task and Sonam seems accomplished here as well. Vishal-Shekhar's soundtrack does not skip the emotions and keeps the spectator all glued during the songs. The usage of yesteryear hits is, of course, an added bonus. Anshuman Mahaley's cinematography captures the stunning hilly terrain and the beauty of Himachal Pradesh with flourish.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by The Times Of India - Madhureeta Mukherjee

Sonam Nair's 'coming of puberty' film handles simple issues sensitively, though it doesn't delve too deep. The subtlety appeals, but lacks drama in the second half, with a mediocre climax. Teenagers will find a slice of their life in Gippi, and adults might protest to such 14-somethings extreme indulgences in fashion, hot-bods and green-tea diets. The mom-daughter moments exude emotions and shed the typical broken-home baggage. Overall, a simple story that stays pre-pubescent and doesn't quite grow into the high-school of stories.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Nowrunning - Mansha Rastogi

The shortcomings of the film get covered up by the near perfect casting of the film. There couldn't be a better Gippi than Riya Vij. She is chubby, chirpy, arrogant yet sensitive and every bit like any teenage girl her age. Even Arbaz Kadwani as the fatty younger brother is brilliant in his part. Divya Dutta is her usual perfect self and briskly moves between being the mother and the friend. Taaha Shah as the bad boy too is convincing.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by NDTVMovies - Saibal Chatterjee

Gippi has many such awkwardly overwrought scenes, none worse than the one that pits the girl’s mamma against her estranged husband at the latter’s second wedding with a foreigner. At the end of it, when peace has been restored by the spunky Gippi, they all pose for a happy family portrait.

Gippi is a feel-good drama and everything, even an overdose of clumsy preaching, is fair when the principal pursuit is happiness.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Koimoi - Mohar Basu

Riya Vij paints an unbridled and plausible picture of the character she depicts. Having her teeth gritted deeply in the skin of the character, she easily matches up to the skill of co-actress Divya Dutta. Her work is utmost effortless and she is the film’s wonder girl.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Indian Express - Shubhra Gupta

It's nice for Gippi to be saying what it does. That fat and frumpy is not bad. That it is quite all right to be who you are, and not anyone else. That winning is not everything. But it would have been nicer if it had been said in a newer, fresher way.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Bollywood Life - Deboshree Ghosh

But the film could have been crisper, and the humour a tad more spot-on. It is great visually – like any other Dharma film – shot in the picturesque locations of Shimla. Jayati Modi goes amazingly wicked onscreen, while Riya will get better with time, if she continues acting. Divya Dutta is lovely and Taaha is charming and steps into the shoes of a lost high school bloke pretty well. Gippi is an earnest attempt, but fails to satiate our filmi taste buds ‘coz of a rickety script followed by mediocre dialogues. We were definitely expecting more!

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Rediff - Kshamaya Daniel

Director Sonam Nair’s Gippi will appeal to tweens and teens, but not as much to adults mainly due to the lack of a serious plot and any volume control whatsoever.

I wouldn’t say it was a chick flick, since that’s only romance and A LOT of drama, but it could be a good substitution.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Zeenews - Ananya Bhattacharya

As Gippi, Riya Vij does a fabulous job. She brings to life the many irritations and heartbreaks that teenage is so known for, and deserves a hearty pat on the back. Divya Dutta, in this film too, plays her role brilliantly. Abandoned by her husband for someone ‘better’, Dutta leaves one at a loss for words by portraying the plight of the single mother juggling between her beauty parlour, household chores and bringing her children up in the best way possible. Jayati Modi, apart from her manner of dialogue delivery, is believable as Shamira. Taaha Shah, too, as Gippi’s crush, is good. The rest of the cast – mostly consisting of school kids, support the main ones competently and doesn’t leave one with any complaints.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Dailybhaskar - Mayank Shekhar

This is a fairly intimate story (smartly written and directed by Sonam Nair) made so real by an unselfconscious performance by the lead actor (Riya Vij) who couldn’t herself be over 14 or 15 years old while the camera stays on her almost throughout, enlarging her face to 30 times its size as she remains restraint, rarely missing a note. Contrast this with her theatrical dad’s cameo and you might be able to notice the difference. Some are just born screen talents, some are not. Divya Dutta plays the gentle mom. Rarely do you come across an audience applauding at the end of a film, much less at a press show. I did here. This is because this film nails it in the end. Very few do.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by DNA India - Tushar Joshi

Riya Vij as Gippi is extremely likeable and a perfect cast for the lead role. She has this cool vibe which makes her act believable. She’s someone who you would want to hang out and spend a day with. The supporting cast especially the kids are fantastic. It is the grownups that drag the film. There are some touching moments that will resonate with a lot of girls her age.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Sify - Sonia Chopra

Debut writer-director Sonam Nair makes a film that's much like Gippi – open-minded, intelligent and brave. While the ending is a bit improbable, overall the film is a merry ride.

Riya Vij sparkles as Gippi and carries the film on her able shoulders. She makes playing Gippi look effortless, when it's a layered and challenging role. Doorva Tripathi is just as awesome.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Mid-Day India - Shubha Shetty-Saha

An opportunity made to go waste by director Sonam Nair, specially considering she got oodles of acting talent on her side. Riya Vij, plays a confused, troubled teenager with aplomb and the other fresh faced kids, which includes Kadwani and other school students, each of them play their roles with a lot of earnestness and sincerity.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by India Today - Vinayak Chakravorty

Riya Vij is spontaneous as Gippi. The mom-daughter chemistry between Riya and Divya Dutta is natural, too. But the film could have done with some solid writing, notably in the second half. Gippi is a coming-of-age flick that doesn't quite come of age.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Movietalkies - Joginder Tuteja

What makes up for this though is the good pace that Gippi maintains which ensures that there is no boredom that ever steps in. Moreover the performances are consistently good. Riya is quite good and one looks forward to what she does next. Arbaz comes up with a very sweet act and is an absolute natural. Jayati plays the 'Poo' part to perfection and has the potential to be seen as a leading lady in a couple of years from now. Divya Dutta is fabulous and is continuing to make very good impression film after film, last being Special 26. Doorva Tripathi as Riya's friend is just an antithesis of what a 'curious-about-sex' girl is perceived to be and this is where she scores. Taaha Shah is natural as Riya's crush and breaks the stereotype of a hunky dude. Vishal-Shekhar's music goes well with the film, especially the song Baby Doll which is very catchy.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by IBN Live - Rajeev Masand

Writer-director Sonam Nair's debut film hits rough patches because the writing is so derivative, few of the characters feel particularly original or interesting. The key tragedy with the film is that while some of Nair's ideas are progressive and strong, her execution seldom matches up. The film addresses puberty, menstruation and sex education, but these scenes never achieve a matter-of-fact, 'normal' tone. Instead Nair appears to be calling out to the viewer, demanding appreciation for her 'mature' choices.

Gippi Movie Reviews  by Bollyspice - Prateeksha Khot

A lot of that is purely due to the refreshing and enjoyable performances by the child artists. Riya Vij is simply adorable as Gippi and there is an earnestness and confidence visible on screen which is pretty commendable for a first timer. Arbaz Kadwani plays her brother Booboo who is a lot more interested in their mother’s parlor than she is. The camaraderie between the two is so genuine and fun, it would remind you of the crazy fights and times you had as kids with your siblings. Divya Dutta plays Pappi, their single pretty cool mom who wants to prove that she has raised their kids the best way possible single handedly. All the other kids in the movie are pretty much adorable too. Gippi is not without flaws and there is very little originality to it. Even then, it stays close to being the feel-good movie that we all need once in a while.
